'Long live the immaterial....effect no.55,
is Dineo Bopape's third solo exhibition in Mart House Gallery, where
she will show her latest installation with videos and photo prints.
Bopape’s installations,
mostly including her videos, drawings and photographs, are the result
of the collecting of objects that invoke strong emotional reactions.
Many of the objects she is using are saturated with stories and contain
memories of previous places where they might have been used. Yet,
some other objects, on the other hand, are interesting for Dineo
because of the places they occupy within our material culture: ‘they
carry, hold, attach, keep things together as well as burden us, metaphorically
and physically’. The intriguing video installation ‘The
problem of beauty’ will leave you in a rhythmic trance to illusionary
worlds.
Dineo Bopape had a residency in De Ateliers Amsterdam from
2005 till 2007, and in May 2010 she completed an MFA at Columbia
University, New York. Recently at Art Amsterdam she was nominated
for the Thieme Art Award. She was selected for the exhibition The
Generational: Younger Than Jesus at the New Museum New York in 2009,
and was the winner of the 2008 MTN New Contemporaries award, South
Africa. Recent group shows include Life Less Ordinary: Performance
and Display in South African Art at the Fotogallery in Cardiff, Wales
(2010) and in Nottingham (2009), and Rebelle: Art and Feminism 1969-2009
at the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem, The Netherlands (2009).
